The House Film Review – 88 Minutes of Total Nonsense

Comedy (nonsense) starring Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler.

They play a couple who need to find a way of funding their daughter's college fees after the scholarship they were hoping for doesn't come through. They setup an illegal underground casino with the help of their neighbour and the money starts rolling in. There's a sub plot involving a corrupt local politician, who is stealing the town's money, but he gets what he deserves in the end.

The comedy is dark in places, especially where the stars adopt their gangster alto egos, 'the butcher' and 'the burner'. The comedy is wild in places, but I'm afraid not all the jokes work. It's got a few LOL funny scenes, but mostly it's overly peppered with weak humour.

Was there really a script to follow, or mostly spontaneous? I'd like to say this was great improvised comedy, but I'd expect much more from the two stars who have both performed better in previous comedies.

As always the outtakes during the end credits are the best bits.

4/10.
