Hereditary - tragic family drama

Image
Psychological horror drama about a recently deceased grandmother and the strange connection she had with her daughter and granddaughter, and the equally strange dynamic the mother has with her husband and son.  These characters seem to be possessed at different points by a spirit with horrific consequences. Though I'm not a horror fan, the rave reviews made me curious. This is a well-made film with some great acting, though the ending is weird. Several scenes with lots of naked elderly people without knowing why they were there was unnecessary, and drug taking scenes never sit well with me either, but that might just be me. 6/10

Oceans 8 - Women can steal stuff as well

Image
Comedy adventure. Staring an almost all-female cast, a team of women (each with a special skill) are assembled to pull off an 'impossible' diamond heist, in the shape of a $150M Cartier necklace. Sandra Bullock plans the robbery, the team prepare the details. The film starts well, but is a little boring towards the end. I was not convinced by the actual robbery as (unlike Ocean's 11) there was no sense of a possible failure and there was no villain character. There was a glamorous tone but lacking a really clever plot or character chemistry. Not a bad film but could have been considerably better. 6/10.

Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom - Tense, fast-paced sequel that will keep you entertained (mild spoilers)

Image
Fantasy action adventure with elements of horror/disaster. Look out for plenty or references to the original Jurassic Park film. The dinosaurs are trapped on the dangerous volcanic island 'Isla Nublar', the volcano is erupting! The dilemma is whether to save the dinosaurs or let them perish. So the military are mobilised, arrive and airlift numerous dinosaurs. However, we learn that the intension is to sell the animals as weapons at auction, while also developing a new monster dinosaur specifically for special military purposes. Our heroes need to save the captured dinosaurs and deal with the special mutant creation. I found myself caring for the cast and the dinosaur's outcome. Very good 3d depth, but be careful as some scary scenes might not be suitable of a very young audience. Recommended tense, fast paced sequel that will keep you entertained. 7/10

Solo. Han's Origin Story

Fantasy space adventure, which had the feeling of a modern western set in space. A heist film with lots of action involving some intense battle sequences. 'Bangy', 'crashy' films always sends my wife to sleep, and she nodded off during this. This isn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, although Solo is only an average origin action film, that also introduces some other major characters as well. I imagine all the major characters will get the same treatment. The feminist android character is an interesting 'new' character. There's no need to invest in the 3d option as there's very little noticeable depth. An 'ok' film but nothing really special. 7/10
