The Accountant – the film Jack Reacher2 wished it was

Stars; Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick & JK Simmons.

Affleck's character is a socially awkward individual, who suffers from autism, he plays a tortured character, who is depicted very well. Someone that you can't help becoming interested in, both for his character and his condition.

As a child he was a maths wizard who had a strong need to finish anything started, demonstrated by the completing a jigsaw up-side-down scene. He is missing the last piece and goes into meltdown until it is found. As an adult, Affleck is an accountant, a mathematical genius with an obsession with order and consistency. His considerable skills are much in demand with criminals and mafia in order to launder money.

Affleck is a reclusive figure with a dark secret, his script consists of very few word and those he has are always softly spoken. There are lengthy character building scenes via flash-backs, these explain how dealing with autism as a child and the strained relationship he had with his military dad (who felt the need to toughen him up) builds his awkward personality. The end result is he becomes an extreme, highly efficient hit-man.

Kendrick's character spots an accounting anomaly in her technology company, Affleck is brought in to investigate the millions of 'missing' dollars, and they begin a friendship. While this is going on, the US Treasury Department, headed by the Simmons' character is trying to investigate this mysterious financial genius who is connected to various underworld figures. Don't worry, all the various sub-plots are all brought together at the end.

I was initially put off watching this due to the poor reviews, so went with low expectations. Well, watched last night and I was pleasantly surprised. Though the plot has some twists, it isn't as 'twisty' as probably intended, anyone can predict the interwoven plots. I still found it quite watchable. There are some well-choreographed action scenes but also some heart-felt moments.

Recommended action film.

7/10.
